The Mattie Jones Veranda

The most prominent feature associated with Crenshaw Hall is the large front porch which spans the full length of the front of the house. Added around 1910, this porch features classic hand-crafted Corinthian columns. Each column is topped with Corinthian capitals, known as “skimozes.” The wrought iron rails for the porch were crafted on sight by Tim Chase. The rails along the porch were designed by Tim Chase in collaboration with well-respected local artist and landscape designer Margot DeBarmore, and are unique to Crenshaw Hall.

The red double front doors were installed in 1860, and are a stunning feature of the home. The individual doors may seem narrower than you are accustomed to seeing. This is due to the Italianate style after which the doors were fashioned. Italianate was a popular style in America from around 1830 to 1860. This style draws upon Tuscan architecture which featured narrower doors. Also note the excellent quality hand-etched panes of glass that surround the front door. These panes are incredibly well preserved and are extremely rare.
